Navigating the Off-Season

Dec 04, 2023

It's that time of the year, most Fall season sports are settling into the off-season at about this time or putting the finishing touches on the season before the long break.  For most of us, it's a time to reflect on the past season and plan for the upcoming season. For some of us it's a long period of relaxing, doing other things, and worrying about the next season when it gets closer.  I don't recommend the second approach; it doesn't give you enough time to get ready for the next season and get in the proper mindset to compete again at a high level.

Here are some of the things that you can do to successfully navigate through the off-season with a purpose and a mission to put you in the best position to start the next season off with a BANG!!

1) Taking time to reflect on the most recent season. Reflecting on the good things that you did, the progress that you made as a player, new skills you learned, skills you executed successfully. Also, taking time to reflect on your shortcomings, where you struggled in your game, to give you an idea on things that you can work and improve on before the next season.

2) Setting short-term and long-term goals is key to measuring progress and maintaining motivation when you just want to "chill" or "take it easy" during a long off-season. I recommend setting daily and weekly short-term goals. Goals that can be achievable that day and that week, in order to continually see the progress that you are making. I also suggest setting 2-3 long term goals that you work on throughout the whole off-season for the same reasoning as the short-term goals but on a larger scale.

3) Stay primed and competitive. What I mean by that is it can be easy to become complacent and comfortable in the off-season, it can be difficult to flip the intensity switch when the new season comes around. I highly suggest playing scrimmages with your teammates, entering individual tournaments or competitions, or simply setting up a couple of practice games throughout the week. Anything to give you that taste of competing on a regular basis as the off-season progresses.

With all of that being said, the off-season is a great opportunity to improve your game, your mind, and your body to set yourself up for a strong upcoming season. Put in the work now so you can start off the new season with a BANG!!
