"Torn" Expectations

Sep 14, 2023

In the NFL, the New York Jets were a hot topic of debate in the offseason and the hype surrounding their season opener on Monday night was at an all-time high, facing off against the Buffalo Bills. The Jets team and their fanbase had high expectations for the season after a stretch of unlucky results and poor performances over the past couple of years. Why all the expectations all of a sudden? It all points to one man: Aaron Rodgers. Aaron Rodgers is a Super Bowl champion and four-time MVP who is considered one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play the game...and the Jets landed him in the offseason. Naturally acquiring a QB of his caliber creates expectations for the team, and if you caught this season of Hard Knocks on HBO you would figure that out real fast. Rodgers was supposed to be a game changer, the spark the offense needed and the type of leader who can bring a locker room together and go out and get the job done as a team. Very high expectations.

Unfortunately, only minutes into the game, Rodgers suffered a torn achilles and is now out for the rest of the season, and given his age, a big chance he retires. That is catastrophic news to the Jets, expectations thrown completely out of the window in a matter of minutes. Safe to say expectations are "torn".

Being faced with this scenario is incredibly difficult and you could imagine how the team was feeling after Rodgers went down and seeing their high expectations for the season disappear. But something wild happened, the Jets bounced back and eventually won the game against the Bills in an electric overtime touchdown run. The team had two choices: first choice was to be upset, say "here we go again", and let Rodgers' injury affect their performance and attitude. The second choice was to come together, embrace the adversity and give it their all. They chose the second option.

The point being, we all have expectations personally and as a team when we step onto the field or the court. But things happen, it's how you react to the situation. It is up to you to make the choice to push forward and create your success, regardless if your expectations are shattered and adversity is hitting at an all-time high. In closing, expectations can disappear in a matter of seconds but it's how you react and deal with that loss is what makes you a better player and competitor in the short and long term.
