Redefining Failure

Failure—it's a word that makes most athletes uncomfortable. But what if I told you that failure isn’t something to fear? In fact, it’s one of the most valuable tools you can use for growth.

Let’s shift our mindset for a moment: what if failure wasn’t the end of the road, but a necessary step toward improvement?

Here’s the truth: every athlete, no matter how successful, has faced failure at some point. The difference between those who succeed and those who struggle is how they respond to it.

Failure is an opportunity to learn, adjust, and come back stronger. Think of it like a muscle that needs to be stretched in order to grow. Without that stretch, you can’t build strength.

So, how do you embrace failure as fuel for growth? Here are a few key strategies:

Reframe your perspective:

Instead of seeing failure as something to avoid, try to see it as feedback. Ask yourself, "What can I learn from this? What’s the lesson here?"

💡 Separate your self-worth from your performance:

Understand that failing doesn’t mean you're a failure. Your value as an athlete isn’t tied to a single performance or outcome.

🔥 Use failure to fuel motivation:

After a tough moment or a loss, use that energy to drive you forward. Let it motivate you to work harder, fine-tune your weaknesses, and come back stronger.

Breaking Records at 12 Years Old?!🏊

In Australia, one of the longest-standing swimming records was broken...by a 12-year-old! Braxtyn Truman, who competed in the U12 400m freestyle, swam a 4.39.98, breaking the former record of all-time great distance swimmer Grant Hackett. Truman later told journalists that he wants to follow in Hackett's footsteps, and he's well on his way!

Baseball in The City of Roses?🌹

MLB may have a team in Portland soon, at least if one group has anything to say about it. Portland Diamond Project, an effort to get the league to bite on an expansion franchise, recently released renderings of their proposed stadium. Home runs over water views? Yes please!

Major Recovery, New Appreciation ❤️

Just like your mind, your heart is, well, pretty important. New York Islanders hockey player Mike Reilly noted that he had a new appreciation for our blood-pumping organ after recovering from heart surgery over the past 4 months. Now, he's returning to the game he loves, showing you shouldn't give up just because life hits you with a major setback!

🏆 Your Homework!

This week, think back to a time when you failed in your sport—whether it was a missed shot, a loss, or a poor performance. Write it down, then reflect on what that failure taught you. What lessons did you take from it?

Next, set a small goal for yourself in training that challenges you in an area you’ve struggled with. When you face a challenge or setback, use that failure as motivation to keep pushing.

At the end of the week, reflect on how your approach to failure has shifted. Did seeing failure as a tool for growth change your mindset or your performance? If so, keep building on that mindset, and remember: failure is never the end—it’s just the beginning of your next step toward greatness.
